Bliss! A lie-in until 11:30am. It wouldn’t last for much longer. A big day ahead. The eagerly anticipated Manchester Derby was kicking off at 2:30pm local time. Of the remaining 5 bodies only one amongst us was a Red. True, none of the rest of us were City fans but we were today. After a bit of brekkie we went in search of a bar for the match.
We found a place opposite Mambo’s. There were several TV screens to watch from. Paul H the Red was sat at the end of our little row. Back turned, watching his own little screen like Billy no mates. The bar was mainly filled with City fans. Kick-off and the huge anti-climax of an early Man U goal. A few cheers, most notably from Billy.
After the initial shell-shock the roof was raised when Tevez chased a lost cause and layed up Barry who finished expertly. Game on! City definitely on top as the first half closed. Half time interval and Billy decided to have a chat before hostilities resumed and he was sent back to his own little corner.
The second half had it all. Dodgy defending from City. Man Utd pressure. A headed goal from Fletcher. A superb equalizer from Bellamy. More school boy defending and another Fletcher header. A last minute equaliser by Bellamy after Mickey Mouse show boating from Rio. Then Fergie time. The ball inevitably falling to Owen in the 108th minute who coolly slotted home. Billy was in ecstasy. The rest of the bar looked on in disbelief.
On the whole Man U deserved the win and the Man City fans seemed to take it on the chin. There was no trouble after the game and everyone were soon laughing and joking again. Billy was a one man Karaoke machine.
“Tonight’s gonna be a good night!”. I still can’t get that bloody tune out of my head.
The night began with another good meal at the Boatyard accompanied with a few bottle of wine. Then it was the usual bars, free shots, free pint cocktails and beer. Rounding the evening off at Chaplin’s with some more dodgy dance moves. So it was the end of another boozy mini break with the lads. Body just about intact. Hopefully no more stag do’s for the foreseeable future. Next year lads?
