You would think that I would have learnt over the years. As long as I can remember, any visit, trip or night out with Ange is accompanied with an “Angism”. Something so uniquely Ange that it is marked indelibly on the memory. Although she saved it for last, this visit was not an exception.
The day started off pleasantly enough. A typical relaxing Sunday morning you would think. I had planned to catch the 11:00am train (well, bus as it happened as there were engineering works on the route) to get me to Guildford, and then on to Gatwick in plenty of time for my 3:40pm flight to Málaga. Angela was not having it.
“Its only an hours drive away, I’ll take you to the Airport!”. Oh why did alarm bells not start ringing?
Angela had arranged a day out with friends at the London Irish rugby match for the Afternoon. So she would need to drop me off at around 12:30ish. Not a problem. She went out to pick up a friend from Reading station as I packed the last of my things. It was 11:30am when the Classic Ange moment struck, as she returned from the station.
“The traffic is horrendous. It might be better for you to walk to the station.”. A slight tinge of panic started to set in.
“But you were taking me to the Airport?”.
“Oops. Can’t you catch the train?”.
“Seeing that the train/bus left at 11am, not really.”
“OK then. Lets go”.
Off we crawled to Gatwick Airport. Still, there was time for Ange to take the top down on the Merc. Well, I suppose you have to take advantage every chance you get over here. The traffic around Reading was gridlocked due to roadworks. Ange started to panic. I can’t quite follow the logic of what goes through Angela’s mind at the best of times. During a crisis you can forget it.
“Shit. I’ve forgotten the rugby tickets. Should I turn back”. No problem, Grant was waiting in the apartment. He can collect the tickets for you.
“Shit. I haven’t got a cardigan!”. No problem, remember the solution to the first problem?
“Shit. I haven’t got my trainers!”. Mmmm. I’m pretty sure Grant can carry more than one thing at a time. The panic seemed to lift momentarily from Ange. I knew that this was only temporary.

Angela "Hamilton" Hughes in the Merc.
“Can you drive the car?”. Alarm bells ringing. What is going through her pretty little mind now?
“I can run to the house and get my things and catch you up.”. Deep breath Dean. Respira! Which part of the plan “Let Grant bring your things” was not getting through? To take her mind off things I set about fixing her car kit. Car kit repaired. Dare I say it, calmness restored.
“Shit. They’ll have to leave my ticket at the box office!”. It was creeping up to 12pm. The rugby was not starting until 3pm. A quick call was placed to Karen. The sound of her voice calm, definitely sounding like the “Classic Angism” had been experienced plenty of times before, as Angela explained the latest crisis. Karen re-assured her that they could find there own way to the stadium, and with the invention of Mobile phones, could easily arrange to meet her outside when she arrived. Minutes later we had got to the roundabout and passed the troublesome roadworks. Ange put her foot down and the Merc hurtled towards Gatwick. Calmness restored to Ange. Panic beginning to rise in one slightly frightened passenger.
The next drama happened as we approached the M4. The entry ramped looked fairly busy from a distance.
“Better find another route!” and with that Ange swung the Mercedes out of the entry lane and continued on down the A road to Guilford. With that manoeuvre, was Angela back in control?
“The important thing is to make sure you catch your flight. Its not all bad, at least my briefs match my bra”. Normality restored. As we passed the Motorway, we could see queuing traffic stretching as long as we could see up the motorway. At this point I seemed to remember that there was a train that left Guildford at 1pm. We changed plans and headed for Guildford station.
It was touch and go whether we would make it in time. The sat nav had been programmed to Guildford. The problem was that it was showing two stations in the area. We decided to wing it and take our chances. The clock was ticking. A frantic race in true Top Gear style. A few wrong turns and with 2 minutes to spare we reached the station. A quick goodbye and I raced into the station to buy a ticket and find the Gatwick line.
So much for the 1pm train. My mind had been playing tricks on me. The next train to Gatwick was 13:50. I should have been safely tucked away in the exec lounge at that time. But what could I do? The adrenaline of the rush to the station had subsided, strangely replaced by a sudden urge to have a pee. All the time in the world now so I headed in search of the toilets.
Guildford Station. Quite a large station. Not as big as Piccadilly but bigger than Stalybridge. Must be at least 7 platforms. On the commuter route to London. God knows how many passengers come through this place every day. Sum total of toilets in the station? One, and that was closed for “upgrades”, since February. On enquiring where the nearest convenience was I was told to head for the town centre. Calm down Dean, plenty of time. I headed into the town centre.
My urge to pee was now being kept company by sudden hunger pangs. I spotted a Subway and thought it would be a good idea to kill two birds with one stone. I ordered my foot long sandwich and was about to head for the toilet.
“Sorry, out of order!”. What the bloody hell is wrong with Guildford! I hurriedly left shouting “back in a minute” as I renewed my search for a loo. Luckily I spotted a sign for a “24 hour” facility near to a multi-storey car park. That was going to be plan B but hallelujah it was open and fully functional. I quickly returned for my foot long and paid the extra for the meal deal. A bucket of coke is just what you need!
The train turned up on time and we headed towards Gatwick. I have never been before and didn’t have a clue how far the station was from departures, or where it was. All I knew was that the train pulled in at 14:40 and I had 15 minutes to find it. Luckily, the station is slap-bang next door to the south terminal, and that’s where Monarch fly from. What was all the panic about? I made it to the gate just as boarding started. Angela, you are forgiven. Until the next time!
