Miercoles Santo

Our first Easter procession of the season. We were invited out with the school for Tapas at the Hostal la ermita from where we could see the procession as it passed by the church in the plaza de la ermita.

The school reserved a table and I quickly ensured that I had a great view of the other attraction of the night, the tele to watch the Barca v Bayern Munich clash. Fran was not that far behind. Mari-Carmen announced that the next tapas night would be in places with no TV’s. Just for the women then!

With the game over before half-time, attention turned to the procession. Where was it? It was close to 11pm before it crawled its way towards us. The trono of Jesus was carried by the men of Nerja. Most of them we recognised from the Gym. They performed a tricky manoeuvre to back up and turn around to face the trono of Mary, carried by the women of Nerja. As the tronos faced each other, a saeta was sung from the nearby balcony. A saeta is a traditional Andalucian song that expresses the pain and suffering felt. It was really emotional.

With the saeta sung and the rose petals thrown over the tronos, it was time for the procession to continue there journey back to the Balcon. When the last of the walkers passed it was time for us to find another bar. Tutti Frutti was quickly ruled out so we headed to El Molino for more flamenco.
