Viernes Santo

A relaxing morning recovering from the excesses of the previous night. Today’s plan was to see the processions in Málaga that started around 5pm. Fearing that the traffic in and around Málaga would be chaotic we decided to head for the Limonar district and walk in from there. It is about a 25 minute walk to the town centre from here.

Arriving in town we headed down one of the major routes of all the processions, Calle Larios. In the square they set-up the main viewing stand for dignitaries and VIP’s. Monica wanted to see if she could glimpse Antonio Banderas who was in town for the processions. Alas, we didn’t see him.

Calle Larios.

The first procession.

Nice Easter treat.

Walking down Larios we soon encountered the first procession. We bought some ice cream and sat down and watched the procession go by. Some of the penitents were walking bare-foot. Others were blindfolded. We felt a little guilty enjoying our ice cream as they walked by.

Chasing the Trono.

We then headed in search of other processions. We tried to take a seat in one of the grandstands set-up in Alameda but were not allowed in. Apparently you needed a ticket. We tried to catch up with the procession further up Calle Larios to get a closer look of the Jesus Trono. We ended up taking a seat further up just as the procession was passing. We had a great view. As the trono of Mary arrived so did three Spanish women who waved tickets at us. Apparently we were in their seat. Amazingly, the thousands of wooden chairs that line the route, most empty, are reserved and you need a ticket to sit there.

More penitents with different coloured hats.

The Roman Legion swing into town.

We headed back to Alameda, the massive avenue that runs parallel with the sea. Here we watched our last procession walk by. It was around 10:30pm. The processions were due to continue until 4am. We didn’t have the stamina to last until then so we headed back to the car.
